The Best Geo-Grid Google Maps Rank Trackers and Checkers in 2026

9 tools for seeing where a business ranks on Google Maps, from free one-off checkers to scheduled geo-grid trackers with full history. For each one: what it does well, where it stops, whether there's a free option, and how it charges.

Disclosure: GBPly is our product, and it's listed first because this is our site. Every claim about the other tools links to that vendor's own page so you can check it.

Short answer: if you also manage Google Business Profiles or report to clients, choose GBPly. For regular tracking, compare Local Falcon and Whitespark. For a wider local SEO suite, look at BrightLocal. For a one-off check, use one of the free checkers. More detail in Which should you choose?

What is a geo-grid rank tracker?

A geo-grid rank tracker searches Google Maps for your keyword from many points laid out around your business, then colours each point by your position. The result is a heatmap that shows how far your local visibility actually reaches, instead of one average rank from one spot.

Google ranks local results heavily by the searcher's location, so a business can be first on its own street and missing two miles away. A grid makes that visible, and repeating the same grid over time shows whether your reach is growing.

Each frame is one saved geo-grid scan, played back with GBPly's Rank Replay.

What is the difference between a rank checker and a rank tracker?

A rank checker runs a one-off scan so you can see where you stand today. A rank tracker saves scans, repeats them on a schedule and keeps the history, so you can prove change over weeks and months. Most people start with a free checker and move to a tracker once they need evidence.

    How we compared them

Each tool was checked against its own published pages in October 2026. This is documentation-based research: competitor details come from what each vendor publishes, not from hands-on tests of every tool. We looked at six things:

    Grid flexibility
Grid sizes on offer, whether you can place your own points, and how far apart points can be.
    History and proof
Saved scans, schedules, and something you can show a client, comparisons, timelapses or reports.
    Competitor view
Who ranks above you at each point, not just your own position.
    Free option
A real free checker or allowance, not just a trial that asks for a card.
    Cost per scan
Credits per grid point, whether credits expire, and whether you also pay per location.
    What else it does
Whether ranking sits alongside profile management, or is a standalone tracker.

The 9 rank trackers, tool by tool

    1. GBPly

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Businesses, agencies, and Local SEO specialists that want grids, custom points and animated history inside a full feature GBP tool.

    Strong at

    • Purpose built Geo-Grid tracker. Choose a grid or place up to 144 individual custom points by hand, and schedules re-run those exact points.
    • Rank Replay plays every saved scan in date order and exports an animated GIF for reports or social posts.
    • Click any point to see the top 20 businesses Google returned from that exact spot.
    • Sits inside a full Google Business Profile tool, with profile changes marked alongside your ranking history.

    Watch out for

    • Tracks Google Maps only (currently)
    • No current AI-engine (ChatGPT, Gemini) visibility tracking.

If you pick this, also know: GBPly is our own product. Paid scans make one Google search per map point, so the cost per scan never changes with the result.

    2. Local Falcon

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Specialists who want a dedicated rank tracker with very large grids and AI visibility.

    Strong at

    • Geo-grid tracker with some of the largest grids in the category.
    • Tracks Google and Apple Maps, plus AI visibility features and an API and MCP server.
    • Credit model: a 7×7 scan uses 49 credits.

    Watch out for

    • Monthly credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.
    • Profile management is not its core product.

If you pick this, also know: Falcon AI reports cost extra credits (25 per report, per its pricing page).

    3. BrightLocal

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Agencies that want grids alongside audits, citations and reviews in one suite.

    Strong at

    • Grids sit next to rank tracking, citation audits and review tools.
    • Compare any two grids side by side to show progress.
    • AI Insights explain likely causes of weak areas.

    Watch out for

    • Geo-grid keywords are capped by plan (up to five on Track).
    • Grid is one module inside a broader suite rather than the focus.

If you pick this, also know: Pricing is per location, so costs scale with your client count.

    4. Whitespark

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Local SEO specialists who want polished, shareable grid reports.

    Strong at

    • Large grids (up to 225 points) with a widely praised interface.
    • Separate Local Rank Tracker covers Google and Bing, Maps and organic, desktop and mobile.
    • Products sold individually, so you only pay for what you use.

    Watch out for

    • Grids and the classic rank tracker are separate subscriptions.

If you pick this, also know: Whitespark's GBP management (Local Platform) is also a separate product at $1 per location.

    5. LocalViking

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Agencies that want geo-grids plus classic Maps and organic tracking.

    Strong at

    • Scheduled rescans build a stored ranking history.
    • Tracks Maps and organic positions, on mobile and desktop.
    • Offers a data method that includes service-area businesses.

    Watch out for

    • Its Google Places method cannot track service-area businesses.
    • Its pricing page now redirects to a differently branded app, which can confuse buyers.

If you pick this, also know: Grid credits and keyword credits are separate allowances.

    6. Semrush Map Rank Tracker

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Teams already using Semrush who want Maps grids in the same account.

    Strong at

    • Unlimited keywords within your credits, with competitor heatmaps.
    • Bundled with GBP posting, review replies and listings on Local plans.
    • Reporting API for multi-location work.

    Watch out for

    • Credits refresh monthly and are modest on the base plan (375 credits is fifteen 5×5 scans).

If you pick this, also know: Billed annually per location on the published plans.

    7. Localo

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Small businesses that want simple position maps and guided tasks.

    Strong at

    • Friendly Position Map with competitor clicks straight to their profiles.
    • Free checker plus other free tools (review poster, schema generator).

    Watch out for

    • Grid size and point control are less configurable than specialist tools.

If you pick this, also know: Aimed at owners first, with an agency layer on top.

    8. LeadSnap

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Agencies that want heatmaps bundled with posting, photos and white-label reports.

    Strong at

    • Flat plans with a large credit allowance included.
    • Tracks local pack, Maps and organic results.
    • White-label reports on every plan.

    Watch out for

    • Plans are sized by location count, so a single business pays for capacity it may not use.

If you pick this, also know: CRM and call tracking are sold as separate products.

    9. GMB Everywhere

    Vendor page

Who it suits: Quick, free spot checks from inside Google Maps.

    Strong at

    • See your rank and who ranks above you from any pin you drop.
    • Lives inside Google Maps as a browser extension.

    Watch out for

    • Pin-by-pin checking, not a scheduled grid tracker.

If you pick this, also know: Best used alongside a proper tracker, not instead of one.

Not covered this time: Places Scout, Local Dominator and Merchynt's checker — we couldn't confirm enough from their own pages for this review.

    Buying questions, answered

How many grid points do I need?

For a shop or clinic serving a neighbourhood, a 5×5 grid (25 points) is usually enough. Service-area businesses covering a city tend to use 7×7 to 9×9. Bigger grids add detail but cost more per scan, so match the grid to the area customers actually come from.

    How often should I scan?

Weekly or fortnightly is the common rhythm for keywords you are actively working on, and monthly for the rest. Daily scanning mostly records normal day-to-day movement and burns credits without changing decisions.

Why do my rankings change from street to street?

Google weighs distance between the searcher and the business alongside relevance and prominence. As the searcher moves, nearer competitors overtake you. That is exactly why a single-point rank number hides most of what is happening.

Credits or subscription — which pricing model is better?

Most geo-grid tools charge one credit per grid point, so a 5×5 scan costs 25 credits everywhere. Compare how many credits you get per pound or dollar, whether unused credits expire, and whether you are also paying per location.

Can these tools track ChatGPT or AI search visibility?

A few can. Local Falcon and BrightLocal document AI visibility features. Google Maps grids and AI answers measure different things, so treat AI visibility as an extra report rather than a replacement for Maps tracking.

    Which should you choose?

    One location, tight budget

Start with a free checker (GBPly, Semrush free, Localo). Move to scheduled tracking only once you are actively working on rankings.

Owner who wants it all in one place

GBPly or Semrush Local, where ranking sits next to posts, reviews and profile edits.

    Agency reporting to clients

GBPly (Rank Replay GIFs and client portal), LeadSnap or BrightLocal for bundled white-label reporting.

    Rank-tracking specialist

Local Falcon or Whitespark for large grids and dedicated tracking features.

    Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Google Maps rank checker?

Yes. GBPly's Free Rank Checker gives 250 free map points every month (for example, ten 5×5 checks). Semrush gives free users one campaign and 50 credits, Local Falcon gives new accounts 100 free credits, Localo has a free checker, and GMB Everywhere's extension lets you drop single pins for free.

What is the best local rank tracker?

It depends on the job. For grids plus custom points and animated history inside a full GBP tool, GBPly. For a dedicated tracker with very large grids and AI visibility, Local Falcon. For a broader agency suite, BrightLocal. For polished standalone grid reports, Whitespark.

What is a GMB rank tracker?

The same thing as a Google Business Profile rank tracker. GMB (Google My Business) is the old name for Google Business Profile, and the term is still widely searched.

    Are geo-grid results accurate?

They reflect what Google returns for a search made from each point at scan time. Results move slightly from day to day, so judge trends over several scans rather than a single point on one day.

    Can I track competitors?

Yes, in most tools. GBPly shows the top 20 businesses at every point you scan; Semrush, Localo and BrightLocal show competitor comparisons; Local Falcon lets you scan competitor locations separately.

Can I place my own points instead of a square grid?

Several tools allow custom or drawn areas. GBPly lets you click to place 1 to 144 points anywhere, and scheduled scans re-run those exact points. LeadSnap lets you draw a grid over the map, and GMB Everywhere uses single hand-placed pins.

Can I share ranking history with a client?

GBPly's Rank Replay exports an animated GIF of your saved scans and can be shown in a client portal. Whitespark and LeadSnap document shareable or white-label reports, and LocalViking exports PDFs.

Do service-area businesses work in geo-grid tools?

Usually, but check. LocalViking notes its Google Places method cannot track service-area businesses, while its other method can. GMB Everywhere shows service-area businesses at their general location.

Will a rank tracker improve my rankings?

No tool ranks you directly. A tracker shows where you are weak so you can work on relevance, reviews and profile completeness, and then proves whether that work moved the map.

    How was this list compiled?

From each vendor's own public pages, checked in October 2026. GBPly is our product and is listed first because this is our site. Where a vendor's pages are silent we say "not documented" rather than claiming a feature is missing.
