Running a Free Rank Check in GBPly
The Free Rank Check is a quick, no-credit way to see where a business sits on Google Maps for a single search term. It runs a 5×5 grid of 25 points around the area you choose and shows the position at each one.
Your Free Monthly Allowance
Every account gets a set number of free checks each calendar month. The counter on the page shows how many you have left, and it resets at the start of the next month.
The allowance belongs to the account, not to a workspace — creating extra workspaces does not create extra free checks.
Once the free allowance is used up, further checks draw on your Rank Tracker credits. If there are no credits left, you'll be prompted to top up before running another check.
Running a Check
Start typing the business name and pick it from the list of suggestions, then enter the search term you want to test — for example 'emergency plumber'. The map centres on the business and shows a preview of the 25 grid points before you run anything.
Pan and zoom the map to frame the area you care about, and adjust the spacing if you want a tighter or wider grid. What you see on the map is what gets checked.
Only one check can run at a time per workspace. Results usually arrive within one to two minutes.
Test the search term a real customer would type, not your business name — that's what tells you whether you're being found by people who don't know you yet.
Reading the Grid
Each point is colour-coded by position: green for 1–3, yellow for 4–10, orange for 11–15, and red for 16 or lower, including points where the business wasn't found at all.
The summary underneath gives the number of points where the business was found, the average position where it was found, and the share of points in the top 3 and top 10.
A patchwork of green near the business and red further out is completely normal — Google Maps results are heavily influenced by where the searcher is standing.
Recent Checks
Every check you run is kept in the Recent checks list. Search it by business or search term, filter by business or status, and sort by newest, oldest, best average position or most points found.
The list is paginated, so it stays fast no matter how many checks you build up over time.
Click any past check to reload its business, search term and map area into the form, or press 'Use these details again' on a result to re-run it. If you're about to repeat a check you ran within the last hour, you'll get a gentle warning first.
Printable report
Every finished check has a 'View report' button, on the result and in the Recent checks list. The report shows the map, visibility, average and best rank, the rank spread and a short plain-English summary.
Press 'Print / Save as PDF' to print it or save it as a PDF to send to a client. Untick 'Include upgrade panel' if you don't want the Rank Tracker panel on it.
Reports carry GBPly branding by default. Set your agency name, logo, colour, website and footer text under Workspace Settings → Custom Portal Branding and every report uses your branding instead, even on a free account.
Free Rank Check vs Keyword Rank Tracker
The Free Rank Check is a one-off snapshot: one search term, a fixed 5×5 grid, no history tracking.
The full Keyword Rank Tracker adds larger grids, saved keywords, recurring schedules, trend charts, Rank Replay animations and client reports.
If you want to prove progress over time, use the Rank Tracker. If you just want to know where you stand right now, the Free Rank Check is the fastest answer.
Using It From Outside the App
The same checks can be run from your own software, a spreadsheet or another product using the Free Rank Tracker API. See the Developer API section for keys, endpoints and examples.
API checks draw on exactly the same monthly allowance as checks you run in the app.
